2016 saw the return of one of the best known donors to Democratic causes in the world as George Soros entered the fray in a bid to defeat the Republican Donald Trump in the U.S. Presidential elections. George Soros has become a major figure in the Democratic party of the U.S. over the course of the 21st century, but had largely sat out the election cycles from 2008 to 2016 as President Barrack Obama retained control of the White House throughout the period; the rise of the so-called alt right and Donald Trump in 2016 led Soros to make a major return to donating and assisting with discussions on which way the party would head in the future.

Soros is thought to have provided around $10 million in funding for Democratic candidates and Super PAC’s, including a reported $7 million donation to the Priorities USA Super PAC that was dedicated to supporting the Clinton campaign. During the campaign George Soros became an outspoken critic of many of the Republican candidates, and pointed to the dangerous rhetoric of Donald Trump as a sign of the problems the U.S. potentially faced in the coming years. Over the course of the election campaign Soros and Clinton had rekindled their political relationship that has been in existence for over 25 years as the billionaire hedge fund expert received access to the former First Lady to discuss policy.
The 2016 election victory of Donald Trump shocked the majority in the Democratic Party and led to George Soros looking for new ways of bringing the party back together and fighting for election victories in the future. Soros was one of the first to regroup and look to the future as he announced the morning after the 2016 Presidential election he would appear at the Democracy Alliance event in Washington D.C. just a few weeks after the election; despite not planning to even attend the event George Soros changed his schedule to give a speech about the future direction of the party for the group of wealthy donors and top Democrat politicians. The Hungarian born Holocaust survivor believes the Democratic Party must fight the rise of ultra conservatism across the U.S., and must look into the role played by donors like himself as the focus now turns to the next round of state level elections.
