Why Was This Wired This Way?

I moved into this house about two years ago. This outlet had never worked and would trip the GFCI outlet anytime I plugged anything in. I got around to opening it up today. Any idea why someone would wire it this way?

Hot Backstabbed to Hot Neutral Disconnected Ground Backstabbed to Neutral Spot Ground Screw jumped to Upper Neutral Backstab Spot

I installed a new outlet correctly, hot to hot screw, neutral to neutral screw, and ground to ground screw. Everything works now and the Klein Outlet tester shows correct wiring and trips GFCI when tested.

I’m just curious why they would do this when the correct wires were there?
