target diaper exchange

we tried the trick of adding diapers from our baby shower to our target registry and marking them as purchased but when i got to target they asked for a registry barcode for the return and nothing showed up. i tried to start a return and there was nothing either eligible or ineligible for a return. what did i do wrong? i have a bunch of 4s i was hoping to do this with once we got to that point.
