What could have caused this (store bought) mozzarella to go wrong?

I bought a few packages of mozzarella for making pizza, all the same brand. Most of the packages contained (as expected) a ball of mozzarella in some brine. In one package, the cheese was in lumps, like it had either never come together as a ball, or like it had been partially torn apart somehow.

It shouldn't expire for a week and it smells fine. I'm not sure if I'm brave enough to eat it though.

Anyone know what could cause this?
