Tergrid- Why you shouldn’t build it.
Last night, I got to go to my LGS’ commander night and I grabbed my decks. I first played my Mr. House dice rolling fun, going against Krenko, Scarab God, Commander Mustard, and Galea. Somehow I managed to win, probably because they weren’t paying attention to the guy rolling dice in the corner.
The next game, we shuffle pods and I brought out some other decks I had. I asked them which they would rather play against. Them being Ezio WUBRG assassins, Mothman, Aragorn, and Tergrid. They immediately said no to Ezio and then the guy next to me said to play Tergrid. Another guy said “Play what you want man. If you win on turn 3, you win on turn 3.”
I make sure it’s okay with everyone like two or three times and apologize if it goes bad. I mulligan down to 5 and end up going very late into the game before I can do anything. Missing two land drops and such. Well I finally get Tergrid out and play Accursed Marauder. Everyone sacrifices a nontoken creature. IMMEDIATELY a guy says “I’m not playing against Mono Black Tergrid.” And scoops. I don’t get much otherwise. Next turn, I play a discard spell and then everyone scoops.
I felt awful about it, even after making sure everyone was okay with the commander and I feel like some players were still upset about losing to dice rolling.
It wasn’t an optimized Tergrid deck. If it wasnt a “game changer”, it would likely be a bracket 1 deck. But this is the reason why Tergrid shouldn’t even be built.
