Sudanese IMG Studying in egypt. Interested in neurosurgery, feeling lost, need advice
Hey everyone
I’m a second year Sudanese med student at Tanta University in Egypt (public university) currently in semester 4. I have six semesters left plus two years of internship and I want to start preparing early for the U.S. residency match. My goal is neurosurgery which I know is one of the toughest specialties especially for IMGs I feel kind of lost on how to approach everything so I’d really appreciate any advice on these: 1. USMLE Preparation • When should I take Step 1 and Step 2 CK as an IMG from Egypt? • What’s the best way to score 240+ on Step 2 CK? • Any must have resources for early prep?
Research & Clinical Experience • How can IMGs find U.S. clinical experience (USCE) especially in neurosurgery? • What’s the best way to get into research while studying in Egypt? Are there any online or remote opportunities? • Does my research have to be in neurosurgery or would research in another specialty still help my application?
Building a Strong Application • What can I do right now to improve my chances? • How important are U.S. letters of recommendation (LORs) and how do I get them? • Are there any IMG friendly neurosurgery programs I should keep in mind?
General Advice for Egyptian IMGs • Any Egyptian or Arab doctors who have matched in the U.S especially in neurosurgery? I’d love to hear your experience. • What’s the best way to network with neurosurgeons and researchers while still in med school?
I know the path is long and competitive but I really want to give it my best shot. Any advice, personal experiences, or resources would mean a lot. Thanks in advance
