Ragnarok

I was in doubt about the role of the inhabitants of Helheim in Ragnarok. I don't believe that Ragnarok is a literal myth, but I was unsure about the following question: Will all the people of Helheim be called upon to participate in Ragnarok and fight against the gods? If that's the case, isn't there an option to sit out the battle?
