How do I encourage my students when I myself feel hopeless?

I feel completely deflated about everything going on politically right now. I have had my spurts of enthusiasm and energy where I’ve tried to bring current events into the classroom, encouraged my kids to make connections, and engage in discussions with one another. (I teach AP US History so it’s relevant to my curriculum, I promise.) But today I looked out at my kids’ faces as we were learning about the rise of fascism in the mid 20th century, and they honestly looked terrified. I was struck with guilt. Maybe they deserve to have their last few years of blissful ignorance. I feel helpless about it all and I don’t feel like I can pretend for them that it’s all going to be ok.
