When to stop feeding 20% protein (chick starter)
Hello,
I am wondering about feeding chick starter to full grown laying hens.
I had thought it would be OK but then in reading the feeding guide on regular lay feed (16% protein) it said to not feed when egg production had stopped for the season. Then to start back with it in the spring. (The instructions are under 'Feeding Guide' on this product: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/producers-pride-16-layer-crumbles-poultry-feed-50-lb)
So I'm wondering if that 16% protein is too high if the birds are not laying then maybe 20% is too high for adult laying hens?
They do get other food: scratch, plants, fruit and veggies so I'm guessing having a higher protein layer feed makes it so they can have more of the other things in their diet. They also get worms from the garden and dehydrated meal worms sprinkled on their lay mash. Everybody looks healthy and is laying.
Thanks ahead for any info! :)
