At what point during labour does the pain level peak?

I'm still undecided on if I'm going to request an epidural or not, but I don't want to leave it too late and have to go without if I do decide to have one.

At what point do you know you can't cope anymore? And when does the pain 'peak' so to speak? so you can judge if you can keep going without or not.
