Advice needed for getting over my fear of traveling solo to places where I don’t speak the primary language(s)
I'm a 31 year old American woman who has done a fair bit of solo travel, but mostly within the US. This has included multiple long term solo road trips, as well as a year long working holiday in New Zealand.
I'm desperate to get out and see more of the world, but I feel like I have an inordinate fear of traveling to countries where I don't speak the language - especially if I’m going to these places on my own.
I know that in the more touristy areas of a lot of countries you can typically get along just fine only speaking English, but I still trip myself out thinking about all the ways things could go wrong if I’m in a situation where I absolutely need to communicate something important and am unable to do so.
I also think I just hate the idea of inconveniencing people by forcing them to deal with a language barrier. Or of being taken advantage of in some way because I can’t understand how I’m putting myself in danger.
I'm wondering if anyone here has tips for getting over these hangups.
