The Story of Naomi Campbell

Naomi Elaine Campbell was born in Streatham, South London in May of 1970. She was the daughter of a Jamaican ballet dancer, Valerie Morris. At a very young age they lived in Rome, where her mother performed as a modern dancer. Shortly after, Naomi returned to London to live with relatives while her mother traveled Europe with the dance group Fantastica. Her childhood was anything but Ordinary. At the age of 7, Naomi performed in Bob Marley’s Music Video for the famous song “Is This Love”. Her appearance sparked interest in performing arts. At 10 years old, she was accepted into the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, where she would follow her mother’s footsteps, and practice the art of Ballet.

Over the next few years, Naomi’s triumph grew consecutively. From walking the catwalk for designers like Gianni Versace, Azzedine Alaïa, and Isaac Mizrahi , to posing for photographers such as Peter Lindbergh, Herb Ritts, and Bruce Weber, Naomi Campbells name grew quite popular. Not only sought after for her breathtaking poses and looks, but she also became a large advocate for diversity on the runways. She was the first black model to appear on the cover of TIME magazine, French Vogue and Russian Vogue. Naomi was also the first British black model to appear on the cover of British Vogue.

Among all the fashion and fame, Campbell was also responsible for a rather large amount of fundraising and charity work in South Africa. In 1997 Nelson Mandela named her “Honorary Granddaughter” for her endless activism. In 2005, Naomi founded Fashion For Relief and held its first charity fashion show to raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Since the first show, Fashion For Relief has spread widely across the globe, ultimately raising millions of dollars for numerous causes.

Today, Naomi Cambell manages several different businesses such as Scoop Models and Priscillas
Model Management. She still struts her stuff on every catwalk presented, and never stops advocating Diversity and equality for all. She has become a role model to many, and a savior to many more.
